- Party slices:
- 1 × 2 × 4 in. Typical for birthdays and weddings.
- Dessert slices:
- About twice as wide. Good when cake is the main dessert.
Servings are estimates and depend on how the cake is cut. When in doubt, size up, or add a dozen cookies.
Cookies & treats
For a dessert table, plan on 1 to 2 cookies or cakesicles per guest alongside the cake, or 2 to 3 if they're the main dessert.
How to cut a round cake
- Let the cake sit out of the fridge for about an hour so the buttercream softens.
- Use a long, sharp knife. Dip it in hot water and wipe it dry between cuts.
- Cut a circle about 2 inches in from the edge, then slice that outer ring into 1-inch pieces.
- Cut the next ring the same way, and keep going until you reach the small center.
Cutting a heart? Slice it straight across in rows about 2 inches apart, then cut each row into 1-inch pieces.
Remove toppers, disco balls, ribbons and any other non-edible decorations before cutting.
